What is BMI?
Body Mass Index, or BMI as it is commonly known, is used to determine a persons healthy weight range. It is based on height and weight and the formula used to calculate it is:
BMI FormulaBMI = Weight in kilograms / Height in metres ²
Use the BMI calculator below to calculate Body Mass Index then check the results on the chart at the top right of this page. (You can enter your weight into the BMI calculator in either pounds or kilos by switching between the metric and imperial version.)

Basic BMI chart
|18.5 - 24.9||Healthy weight|
|25 - 29.9||Overweight|
|30 - 34.9||Obese|
|35 - 39.9||Very obese|
|Over 40||Morbidly obese|
Remember BMI is only a guide and even though a BMI may indicate a person is overweight, other factors must be taken into account.
For example, heavily built or muscular people may have a high BMI but this does not necessarily mean that they are overweight or obese.
